Evaporative cooler (TC10PEU model - 30” height) - read this before buying
The cons, the pros, and other things to consider-
Third day of 85-90 degree heat outside, 40-45% humidity, and the inside of my place was going to be really warm. Working from home this week planned to bust out the 12,000 BTU portable AC unit which I use maybe 15 days a year when desperate. Its expensive to run and so many people in my area are using these that it has caused outages.
The cooler came just in time. Pulled it out of the box, set it up, and kept the AC off the entire day. These are my thoughts:
The cons:
These only work well in lower humidity conditions so don’t get one if hot days in your area are routinely 55% humidity or higher. Do not expect AC levels of cooling. To work aim the air flow right at you. Don’t expect to cool a room unless its small.
The pros:
With the airflow directed at me when seated it was comfortable when the rest of the room was 80-83 degrees F. Normally at this temp inside I would be sweating but not today. It was not super cold like AC but it worked. Can’t find the products weight but it could be moved by a 10 year old.
Other things to consider:
The TC10PEU (30” tall) model notes it uses 50 Watts of energy. That is less than 5% of what a 12,000 BTU AC unit will consume. In reality using all its features it runs at about 45 Watts (as measured by a gauge on my power station). It has a 2.6 gallon tank and based on today’s usage might run 8 or more hours without having to refill it, starting with a full tank, but the time may be less with very low humidity. It works better if you fill with cold water. One way of keeping the water cold is to fill to 40% capacity which will last hours, and when you have to refill there will not be much room temperature water left. Replenish with cold water from a large pitcher left in the frig. Lastly, there is a lag for this thing to get into cooling mode. The first use it may have been 10 minutes before it started really working. Seems quicker now that its been used a few times today.
