I have owned and used this rotary cutter for more than 10 years. I have the older model and frankly have worn it out, even gluing some parts back together. So when I decided to purchase a new one, especially the newer model, I read the reviews carefully, watched the video on the website and magnified the view here on Amazon. I purchased and have received the newer model in record time I might add. Here is my best advice after successfully using it and remember it is my personal opinion, not necessarily one shared by the company. Start by CAREFULLY wiping the excess oil off the blade with a tissue turning the blade until all is wiped off. I have done that every time I have changed a blade. The blade is very stiff when you first open it and it needs to be moved around to loosen it from its packing position. I have never seen the need for the extra oil in cutting but I understand why the extra blade packages and a new cutter might have it. After cleaning the blade and a few trial runs on fabric, the blade should loosen and roll smoothly. I have cut several layers of fabric now with no problems. Should your new cutter come with a defective blade, try another blade before passing judgement. Also, since most of the negative complaints came regarding the spring coming loose, perhaps a pinch with needle nose pliers to tighten the ends or a drop of super glue on each end would help. Mine has never come loose. Learning to keep the blade angle straight will also prevent running over or away from the edge of the ruler. There is a learning curve with properly using it, but the change in the way you apply pressure allows perfect cutting even while sitting down. My only negative comment is the way you change the blade. While there are not as many parts to remove as in Olfa, etc., it is still difficult to loosen and remove the screw especially against everything you have ever learned. My 2 cents.
