Solid 4 stars, plus some advice for Samsung on how to update the Software and raise it to a spectacular five stars.
I actually received my Gear Fit on 7 April via preorder, and syncing it to my phone was a hassle that took 2 days to work through. That's my mobile provider's fault, not Samsung's, as EVERY other provider has already updated the Note 3 to Android KitKat months ago, and the Gear Fit is designed to work with Kitkat, not Jellybean. Why the delay, V***? A shout out to Samsung service for finding a work around. See, V? Good customer service wins you positive PR and customer loyalty. Try it sometime, ok?
Now that I have it working and have the latest firmware, just two thoughts on how Samsung can update a solid four-star product into a spectacular five stars, as well as an observation of a quirk that is irritating, but giving design trade-offs probably unfixable and in the end worth the hassle it causes.
1. PEDOMETER: You need to activate the exercise apps for it to actually track. That may make sense for running, but for walking? I'd like my pedometer to track my steps from wake-up to lights out at night. Please change the software to add a setting to the pedometer: activate/pause (which is what it has now) and a new setting "always on." I mean, its the Gear "FIT," right? So why should the wearer have to remember to turn it on in the morning to track their 10,000 steps? I already have enough to remember when I groggily roll out of bed, like my name, where I left my glasses last night, and which toothbrush is mine.
2. ORIENTATION: Samsung wisely distributed an update just before official release, so you latecomers should have it already. This update added a sleep monitor, and perhaps more importantly, the update allows you to change the orientation to between landscape (you have to twist your head/arm to read) and portrait (like typical watches). I love the vertical/portrait orientation for almost all of the apps, and it's a great addition. Thank you Samsung for listening to beta testers and previewers. However, as other reviewers on the internet have observed, the new portrait mode makes reading notifications difficult, as the portrait mode only allows for 9 letters per line with the small text size. That's maybe 2 short words per line, and longer words typically carry over to the next line for clumsy reading. I'd love to see another update that allows you to set the orientation on an app-by-app basis, or at least display notifications in landscape mode while keeping everything else is in portrait.
There you have it. IMHO, these two software changes would change a solid device into a spectacular one.
3. IRRITATING BUT (PROBABLY) UNAVOIDABLE QUIRK: The last point concerns the clip on female micro USD dongle for charging. It's a pain. I'm most likely to lose several of them, at least as soon as Samsung starts selling replacement ones. Until then, I will have to satisfy by inner idiot by losing just the one it came with. (See above for my general cluelessness and forgetfulness regarding activating the pedometer.) So that's a money maker for Samsung, and quite annoying. If it was done to force people to buy charger attachments, then my response is grrr! But I think it is far more likely that something like this was a necessary design tradeoff to achieve an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance: an exposed micro USD would increase the risk of water and/or dust getting inside, in which case, my response is "oh well, I wish it were different, but good call Samsung." I like IP67. Yes, I do. Now I can take my Gear Fit to bed and into the shower, without concerns. Get your minds out of the gutter, reader, ok? I'm referring to the sleep monitor (added in the update, did I mention that?) and the water resistance.
