I have had ice dam issues on one side of my house with a 50 foot long section of gutters. I use the roof rake to clear the snow from the bottom few feet of the edge of my roof, but the roof rake would pack the snow into the gutters, and when the packed snow in the gutters froze, I would still get ice dams since the snow melting higher on the roof couldn't get off the roof. So, I just ran one long shot of this heat tape in the gutters without doing the zig zag on the roof, that way I could still roof rake without damaging the wires, and it greatly saves on the electricity costs. I also unplug it whenever the roof is clear so it isn't killing my electric bill. This method worked for me for the entire winter season last year with no more ice dam issues.
