I figured out how to use these correctly thanks to a fellow amazon customer! I was putting the straw in the wrong hole! Do not put the straw in the large center circle shaped hole, put it in the smaller X shaped hole that's off center. This is a more snug fit and allows the lid to properly vent (thus avoiding the water squirting out everywhere issue). So, put your lid on first, no straw, then put your straw in the tiny X shaped hole. If you do it this way, the water will only gush if you cover the vent hole. I still only gave the product 4 stars because of the hard PLASTIC straws without a bend in them and the fact that my son likes to shake his drink up and down so with the straw in the correct hole, the vent hole is now wide open to have water come out of it if it's shaken up and down like an excited toddler would do. For anyone who is wondering, it DOES pass the pinch test, I just checked and these do not change color when squeezed and twisted (means no fillers added to the silicone). This was my original review (2 stars) before I knew how to use these! Good idea in theory, just not exactly useful for us due to the fact that my 14 month old only wants to push the top center down and make water gush out the top of the straw. He thinks it's hilarious. The product does have an air vent probably to try to prevent this, but it does not work to keep water from gushing out. If I put a disposable straw in and hold the bottle myself and not let my son hold it, he can drink out of it without spilling. Also if the straws were silicone and bendable I could justify spending the money just for the straws but they are hard plastic and do not have a bend in them making them even harder to use becuase you have to have it angled correctly to get liquid and not air. (Or tilt your head down to suck it). Easy for an adult to do but not so much for a 1 year old.
