It's Not Piano Lessons, It's A Game About Timing & Anticipation With a Reward Of Making Music
This app does not teach you to play the piano. Instead it's a game where you can make some really fine sounding Christmas music using one, two or three fingers at a time by watching where black and white bars that drop from the top of the screen are going to hit, anticipating them, and pressing the keys at the appropriate time. There is both positive and negative visual reinforcement as you progress through the songs like "Good!", "Great!", "Perfect!" and also warnings like "Too Late!" or a red "X" for mistakes. At the end of the song you receive a round of applause, a letter score A, B, C, D, E or F and some point and combo statistics about your rendition of the piece. If you think of this as teaching you to play the piano and you know you don't know how to play the piano, you will easily be discouraged. If you view it as a game where you must just synchronize your one finger, two and three finger combo screen touches with the moving bars, you will see that this is indeed JUST A GAME with the sweet reward being that you WILL be making music. It's fun and there are 28 different songs, but it does get harder as there are 4 difficulties ranging from Very Easy through Hard. The one thing that it does have in common with learning to play the piano is that it takes practice. Each time you do it you'll get better. Varied choice of classic songs, although there's a few pretty obscure ones that I would have liked to see replaced with more popular ones. The games is fun to play around with. It takes up only 3.05MB installed. It will be easier and more fun on devices with bigger, wider screens that enlarge the keyboard. Controls worked well and the songs sounded pretty impressive on my Fire 8.9 HD. Since some of the harder songs require you to touch 3 fingers to the screen at the same time to play chords, both of the new Fire HD's will handle this since the screens allow for 10 point capacitive touch. Some devices including the regular Fire will only recognize 2 of the 3 touched keys. I think some kids could really impress Mom, Dad or the grandparents for Christmas with this app by PRACTICING up on a few of these songs. I liked the game and the music. I hated the "trap"(See below). THE TRAP: Once you pick a song to play, you're trapped in it until you finish playing the entire song all the way through. There's an option to just "Listen" to the song but even if you pick that, you will be in a loop of listening to just that ONE song or forced to play it through to get to different song. The workaround is to cheat: Select to play the song on "Expert" because then it doesn't stop and wait for you to hit the correct keys and once the song finishes you can start over with a different one.
