Worthy Science Fiction
Yes, if you loved The Book of Strange New Things (and I did), this differs significantly. Nevertheless, don't let that stop you from enjoying Oasis for what it is: pretty good science fiction. Sure, I still wish every science fiction series could be as grand and glorious as Battlestar Galactica was. But so far, nothing surpasses it. So I'll take whatever science fiction I can get that is interesting and watchable. This is. And I thought the acting was very good too, including the smaller parts. As for the story, Michel Faber's uniquely visionary perspective is tangibly present in the script, although diluted. I don't argue with that fact either.
Keep in mind that The Book of Strange New Things, wondrous story that it is- was not popular on a grand scale with science fiction readers. It couldn't be. It is singular-- too different from mainstream science fiction to have been universally acclaimed. I can sympathize with the creators of Oasis in their need to strike a balance with the mainstream to get this made at all. So my view is that the fact that Oasis exists is a good thing. That it is reasonably well-made on its own terms is still fortunate for admirers of Faber's unusual abilities. Because some of his one-of-a-kind mind is much better than none.
