We got this for a small dog who will not listen to "stay" or "come" commands and darts out of the yard into the street immediately when anyone opens the door. While I did follow instructions and set it up to "shock" should the time come when there's no other option, I prefer not to have to do that. Thus far, simply the warning ring has been extremely effective, so that's all we have used or plan to use. Initially, I used both the ring and verbal command at the same time so he associated the command with the ring. I only had to use the warning ring a couple of times and he started to obey my verbal command without the warning ring. He is now consistently responding to those voice commands without the warning ring. I would definitely recoomend this collar.
