This bad boy is a beast!
I mounted this bad boy on my 2011 Dodge Durango as my family and I moved/ vacationed from Seattle, WA to Charlotte, NC. My wife, 2 kids, 2 large dogs, and 2 cats took up every inch of interior passenger and cargo space, so a rooftop cargo box was absolutely necessary. I ordered it later then I meant to and it arrived promptly, the day before we left. It is lightweight but seemed kind of flimsy and this was concerning, but I didn't have the time to test it out since we were leaving the next day. The mounting holes didn't match up with my rails so I had to drill new holes for the rail. Once I drilled the new holes, it mounted on quite nicely. When it was mounted and latched shut, it seemed much more solid and sturdy. This thing is huge! I was able to fit so much stuff in it! It held two full size suitcases, a carry on suitcase, a bag of cat food, a large blue IKEA sack full of my wife's shoes, a deflated inflatable bed, a bed air pump, and a few other things that escape me right now. I know for a fact that we surpassed the manufacturer's weight specifications but we had no choice. It didn't matter, I made sure the weight was centered between the rails like the instructions said and this thing took it like a champ! We drove across the country and saw the sights. This included a stop in South Dakota to see the Crazy Horse monument and Rushmore. That area of the country has many high speed (55 mph+) corners with some pretty decent elevation changes. I was a little concerned that the box may slide or shift on the rails in those high speed corners, but the box stayed put and never moved an inch. During a long stretch of open, flat highway in South Dakota, I cruised for a few hours at 90mph. My wife asked me "Can the box take these kinds of speeds?" And I said "Ask me once we get to Sioux Falls." Because I wasn't sure, but we needed to make time. The answer was a resounding YES! We experienced what seemed like hurricane force wind and sideways rain nearing Nashville, TN on our last stop before Charlotte. I thought there was no way our stuff would be dry since the box isn't waterproof and neither did I waterproof the mounting holes. I was super surprised once we opened it the next day that everything was bone dry. It wasn't all perfect with this box though. The biggest drawback, IMO is that it's a major pain in the pa-toot to get things in and out of it. This is because it is rear opening and the hold open bars get in the way. My wife ended up having to actually climb upon top of my Durango to pull whatever clothes we needed out of the luggage while I held it open with a broomstick. We made sure to plan ahead and minimize the number of times we had to do that. Overall, for the price, this thing can't be beat. It's huge, sturdy once closed, fairly easy to mount and dismount, and surprisingly water resistant. If they could find a way to maintain this price point and performance while making it a passenger-side opening box, I would give it 6 stars and buy it again. Seriously, I overloaded it like an idiot, drove like an idiot, and pushed through heavy rain and this thing took it like a champ, stayed put, and kept our stuff dry. I would recommend this box to anyone. Buy it, follow the instructions, don't drive like an idiot and your stuff will be fine. You won't regret it.
