Good but not ready yet
Have been using TT Deluxe for many, many years. Good tax preparation software, as always. Was ready to leave 2 years ago when Intuit made that horrible decision to remove tax forms, but they fixed it so I remained loyal customer.
Why 4 stars instead of 5? This year's version has what I consider to be a bug that needs to be fixed immediately. I compare TT to my own spreadsheet that I developed and improved over the years, and the numbers were significantly off. So I went form by form to find the problem, which I eventually did.
It turns out the Net Premium Tax Credit - line 26 on form 8962 - does not carry to line 69 on form 1040. All of the other forms flow to 1040 correctly, even if most of them are not yet ready to be filed as of right now (1-2-2017). So I called TT CS, described the issue, and was told that it was identified - and fixed - some time ago. I said it doesn't seem so, so after another hold, CS told me to re-enter data on 1095-A, that should fix it. It didn't - as expected - since I tried that several times before. After another hold time, I granted screen access to my PC so CS could see that what I was telling them was true. After another hold time, I was told that they tried to imitate the problem on their end, and got the same result - form 8962 does not flow to form 1040.
OK so one would think that at the end of all of it, TT would say something like "thank you mr. customer for identifying the problem, we will try to fix it ASAP, we apologize, etc." Instead, the answer was "it's not a bug, it's INTENTIONAL because per IRS direction the form 8962 is not ready to be filed until 1-12-2017." Say what? If that's true, why didn't you say so an hour earlier when I first called? It would save both of us a lot of time. Using that logic, the form 1040 should not populate at all since none of the forms is ready to be filed yet! Furthermore, IRS does not tell TT to make their software functional in some areas and not in others, this was either TT decision or - more likely - a bug that needs to be fixed.
Why all this detailed review of a single issue that more than likely will be fixed in the future? 2 reasons: 1. It is not functional as of today and so it cannot be relied upon by people like myself who buy it in November-December to do tax planning before tax year ends on December 31st; and 2. It leaves a bad taste in customer's mouth when the company does not own up to its mistakes. It reminds me of a fiasco 2 years ago and leaves impression in my mind that Intuit's culture really has not changed, that it only admits mistakes when it really hurts its bottom line. I may give another tax package a try for this reason alone.
