Visually disturbing but stunning, very well acted, & compelling but ambiguous story
4.5/5 stars. I think this is worth renting but maybe not worth purchasing. If you are expecting a movie with non-stop action or a horror film, this is not that movie. At it's core, this a science fiction mystery film. It is more like Arrival (2016; but this movie has a better ending, IMO) with a little of the first Alien (1979) sprinkled in. By the end of the film you will be given enough answers to understand what happened (you'll know as much as the characters) but there will be some left over questions that will have you thinking about the movie after it ends. With some movies ambiguous endings feel like a cop out or like the writers chose it because they didn't know how to wrap up the story, however, that is not the case with this movie. It felt like the right way to end the movie. I really enjoyed this movie and I recommend that you watch this movie without seeing the trailers. Full disclosure, I had low/no real expectations going into the movie so I was able to appreciate the story as it was presented to me. Story: The basic premise is that a team of researchers is trying to identify the source of a strange phenomenon that is potentially dangerous to all of humanity. Acting: All of the cast members did a great job, Natalie Portman was a good choice for the lead. Other stand outs to me were Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny. Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac were good but didn't get to do much in the movie. Visuals: The visuals were beautiful and artistic. There were a lot of details to take in that I sometimes found myself rewinding to the beginning of a scene. It was a well directed movie.
