My kids just turned 9 and 11. I am always looking for "hands-on" activities/products that can really capture their creativity and keep them engaged for awhile, actually diverting their attention from TV or Mine-craft. For us, polymer clay has been fabulous. My kids spent hours working together to create their own board game and made all the game pieces out of clay. My daughter started making her own earrings (picture included) and to her surprise, people started wanting to buy them. Some things we have learned.....follow directions on the package for baking. It is easy to over-bake or under bake; both can result in weakening the clay and making it vulnerable to breaking. Use craft wire to provide structure and to connect other pieces of clay (like head to body). We learned early on that attached pieces will easily break off after baking if not reinforced with wire. Be careful with the black. It will definitely melt at higher temperatures - much more than other colors. This year we are going to make some Christmas ornaments for our tree.
