Advice for ear sufferers aboard an airplane
Been using these things for years and swear by them. Was just getting ready to order more when it occurred to me I ought to take a moment and share some potentially helpful information with chronic sufferers. The earplanes do wonders but you may also not be aware that alcohol GREATLY adds to your discomfort. The pain you experience is caused by smaller than normal eustasian(sp?) tubes not being able to handle the fast changing air pressure upon descent. Mine are especially small i guess because my ears will pop riding an elevator more than 20 floors. Alcohol actually shrinks your tubes temporarily. Do not drink any alcohol for at least 24 hours before flying. Believe me, I've tried a few times when in business class and the booze is free, once having less than an ounce of Bailey's for goodness sakes! Boom! much greater suffering during descent. I also use a nose spray like Afrin just before boarding the plane, first holding my nose and popping my ears and then squirting a couple of sprays in each nostril. I go into the restroom for this embarrassing activity. Otherwise, people think you have a cold and treat you like you have leprosy on the plane. Trust me, these two additional efforts may just make your next flight completely pain free and your recovery from plugged ears post-flight quite minimal.
