Really like
There are a lot of these popping up on the market. I like this one because it is lighter than other ones I checked out and packs up a bit smaller. Very simple to use. Manufacturer has made it really clear what the main problem is that can happen and how to avoid it. (Messing up the regulator by charging the fuel line too fast... open the valve on the tank slowly and there’s no problem). Pros and cons:
Pros:
-works anywhere. See photo where I was able to sit under awning in light rain while warm by the fire. Not confined to fire pits.
- instant on and off. That’s just fantastic... and fire safe! No blowing embers to be concerned about either.
- no smoke! I love this part. If you camp as much as I do you may think about breathing all the smoke from traditional fire and the health impact.
Cons:
- this can not be a roaring fire. The warmth it provides is therefore limited. Beyond a few people sitting immediately around it it is more ambiance.
- crackling fire sound is replaced with steady propane hisssss. This hit me hard at first, but this is, after all, an appliance. I’m over it. Plus I often have music going so it’s kind of moot. Plus, I have a lot of burn holes in clothing from years of the red hot flying embers that accompany that cozy crackle. So again, I’m cool with the propane sound. You’ll just notice it a lot at first.
- The pit itself is soundly constructed, and the powder coating seems durable. Same can’t be said for the lid and handle/strap. Lid feels cheap and reminds me of lots of materials I’ve seen rust out over the years. We’ll see how this goes. Luckily I live in high desert. The handle is kind of crap. Sort of awkward to use and clearly not the best materials. I’m concerned this will fail long befor the rest of the unit. For this thing to work as intended it needs to be conveniently storable and transportable. Which requires a tight fitting lid and strap that lasts. This is why I did not rate 5 stars. The only reason.
- you will go through propane. But look at it this way— based on my use thus far it is cheaper than buying bundled wood at a store or from a campground host. Not by much, but it is.
