I installed mine directly to the joist so it would be as tight to the ceiling as possible. I simply measured where i wanted it to hang, drilled 2 pilot holes through the back metal piece then used the supplied screws to tighten her to the joist. Spent a total of 5 minutes. I will be buying more to do my garage. I have included a before and after picture along with where i drilled and how the finish product came out.
