Great book
The controversy caused by people in my home state pushed me to buy and read this book. It has become clear to me that anytime parents are outraged by a book that it will likely be worth reading, and Lawn Boy was no exception. Evison captured poverty in a way that only someone who has brushed up against it could. All the perils and the unwise decisions that perpetuate it, as well as the general outlook.
It is a good book, and as a poor person who grew up in a judgmental Texas town, I can see why judgmental Texas parents are outraged about this book. But that should tell you more about them than it does the book. I wish I could have read this book when I was in high school, to know that there were other poor people in the same boat.
