The controversy caused by people in my home state pushed me to buy and read this book. It has become clear to me that anytime parents are outraged by a book that it will likely be worth reading, and Lawn Boy was no exception. Evison captured poverty in a way that only someone who has brushed up against it could. All the perils and the unwise decisions that perpetuate it, as well as the general outlook. It is a good book, and as a poor person who grew up in a judgmental Texas town, I can see why judgmental Texas parents are outraged about this book. But that should tell you more about them than it does the book. I wish I could have read this book when I was in high school, to know that there were other poor people in the same boat.
