Great Value and Handy Tool, Very Easy to use.
I am impressed with this tool. Plug it in and pair it to your phone or laptop ( I did it to both so I could watch the graphs and performance reports on the phone while looking up the fault codes on my notebook computer.) Within a couple of minutes, I had downloaded the free "APP" and it was already performing diagnostics on my wife's Ford Expedition. I received two fault codes, one on each of the engine banks front cylinders telling me it had a "occasional lean" reading. I reset the ECU on the truck, cleared the error codes and decided to take it for a test drive. The vast majority of the time, these "slight lean condition" intermittent error codes means the Mass Air Flow Sensor is near the end of it's life. I drove the truck, since it is my wife's and I rarely drive it, and when I hammered the throttle to get onto the highway entrance ramp, there was a sudden but very brief hesitation where the truck "stumbled" and then the truck accelerated just like it should. Sure enough, a new set of error codes appeared and the Check Engine light was back on. Since the Mass Air Flow sensor controls the air fuel ratio of the engine, I was sure this was the source of both the error codes and the stumble during acceleration. When you get this "Check Engine" light codes, and the vehicle has this noticeable, yet very brief "stumble" when you aggressively accelerate, it's time to test the entire truck system and check everything. Don';t ignore the check engine lights because when the Mass Air Flow sensor finally FAILS, the truck will either not start or will run so poorly that it won't go over about 15 mph and the engine will stumble and miss and run poorly. Fix the warning light symptoms before the Mass Air Flow sensor fails and could strand you or your loved one. The "Check Engine Light" isn't just a suggestion, but rather a call to action. Don't ignore it or press your luck. Buy this OBD Scanner and check things out. Frankly, I am not sure how it could be any easier to use. Bought the Mass Air Flow Sensor at my local O'Reilly Auto Parts store for a total price of $129.67 which included tax and shipping. Replaced the Mass Air Flow filter and used the opportunity to "Refresh" the K&N Air Filter. Cleaned the air intake system while I had this apart and reassembled the entire unit. Start to finish, I spent a total of 30 minutes synchronizing the OBD Scan Tool, looking up the codes, disassembling the air intake system, recharging the K&N Air Filter and installing the new Mass Air Flow Sensor. Granted, I am handy and have an awesome set of tools and know how to use them. It would take a mere mortal about an hour to accomplish the same I did in half the time. The point is, you can do it if you own very basic hand tools, you can read and aren't afraid to have to wear rubber gloves to avoid getting your hands dirty. So, between the purchase of this outstanding and extremely handy Scan Tool and the purchase of the new Mass Air Flow Sensor for $130, I had a total of $175 invested in the repairs of this truck. I had called Ford Service garage and they quoted me $89 for hooking it up to the computer, another $110 for the "labor" to replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor (two screws and one wire plug. Seriously, if I was only swapping out of the Mass Air Flow sensor, I could have done the job start to finish in 10 minutes without breaking a sweat) and are you ready for this, $379 for the Mass Air Flow Sensor. With tax, shop supplies and "miscellaneous", the dealer wanted $642 and I achieved the same results for $175. Give the OBD Scan tool a try. Not only is it very easy to use, you will learn more about your vehicle and how it works, which is always a good thing. On the other hand, if you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket, keep your local auto service dealer in business, they do appreciate it.
