Great unit, especially for the price
I've been shooting pictures for the better part of 50 years, and have many packing boxes full of prints with cut film strips and slides. At one time I was processing my own film and slides, and spent way too many hours in the darkroom, burning and dodging my way to that elusive "perfect print". My wife bought me Photoshop one year for Christmas, and I moved into the digital realm with relish. Having been away from active film shooting (30 plus rolls a month) and active digital shooting (couple thousand images a month) for some time now, I only shoot for fun, not commerce.
However, I have all of the old slides and film, so bought this scanner to capture it into a digital format.
I am very happy with the unit. I'm frankly amazed that a unit costing well under a hundred dollars is able to scan and save images from even my oldest films and slides with minimal fuss.
Once I got the unit set for slides (perhaps 10 button presses), each slide costs me two button presses and perhaps 5 to 7 seconds of my time. Even at a pretty decent hourly wage (my office time is typically charged out at $50 per hour), the resultant cost per slide image is on the order of $0.10 to $0.14, including unboxing, scanning, reboxing and such.
There's just no way I could get anywhere near that with an automated service, and I don't need to let go of my precious images to allow someone else to scan them.
Bottom line: Great little unit, inexpensive, easy to use and it seems pretty durable at this point.
I'd instantly buy another one if this one were lost of died for some reason. Can't get much better than that.
