Far Better Than 5 Stars In Looks, Comfort, Ergonomics, and Stability
It's really unacceptable and ignorant that AmazonBasics gives absolutely no information on this fabulous and comfortable stool.
Although this is labeled as a drafting stool (which it certainly can be), I have been in search of a "better mousetrap" work/shop stool. I have two different types of "low to the ground" stools which I need to sit on when I am doing home remodeling or any other "around the house" task where I don't want to be bending forward for hours on end. One of my lousy stools is a Harbor Freight square seat workshop stool. The other is a Duralast round, adjustable height automotive work stool which I believe I got at Autozone. Unfortunately both of them really suck because their 4 swivel casters are located at right under the outer edges of the seats. While I am sitting totally upright with my body's center of gravity over the center of their seats, they work just fine, but the minute I lean forward to any extent both stools tip forward and dump me on the ground, because of their lousy caster wheel placements in relation to a person's center of gravity.
I was excited to see this stool because of the leg configuration.. Instead of 4 unstable caster positions, there are 5 swivel casters, which appeared to extend well beyond the diameter of the seat itself, leading me to believe that it might be far less likely that this will tip out from under me when I shifted my body position out of vertical. The legs do extend well beyond the diameter of the seat itself, at 13.5" off of each spoke, giving them a footprint of around 28-30", versus the diameter of the seat which is a comfortable 15"..
So, when I received this, I couldn't wait to see if this was the answer to my low to the ground, working dilemma. It went together very quickly without the need to follow instructions. Just turn the seat upside down and use the provided machine screws and the provided allen wrench to attach and tighten the vertical post to the underside of the seat and next snap the swivel casters into the holes in each leg. Set the wheeled legs on the ground and insert the support post into the spoke of the legs and you are done. I immediately did my anxiously awaited stability test to see if it would tip over and out from under me, when I leaned forward as if I were reaching down to pick something up off of the floor 2-3 feet away. Rock solid. I couldn't tip this over no matter how far I leaned or reached.
And here is what Amazon so negligently fails to tell you about this fantastic stool, about its ergonomics. First of all the seat itself is extremely comfortable to sit on for very long periods of time. It has sufficient give for comfort without sinking in too far and bottoming out. The seat itself is about 4" thick and covered with black "leather like" material which looks to me that it will be very durable for a long time.
I love the hydraulic lifting and lowering post which allows the seat to raise or lower extremely smooth, infinitely to your desired height for whatever you are doing. When you are sitting on it and you pull up on the handle under the seat, it smoothly glides to its lowest position, which is 20" off the floor. Then to raise it up, you maintain your sitting position but transfer your body weight off of the seat by flexing your legs slightly upward (in other words, taking the downward pressure off of the seat), at which point it very smoothly glides back up to its highest position, which is 25" off the floor.
I will easily find many things to do at both positions. At the highest position, I see myself using it as a very comfy sit down stool for things to be done at a normal table anywhere in the house. And at its lowest position, this will be my "lovin' it" bench stool for home DIY projects such as installing baseboards or trim at the floor, scraping, sanding, or painting walls below 3' off the floor, doing lower to the ground electrical work, etc. This thing ROCKS. And the casters glide as smooth as can be on hard surfaces. It will also roll with a little resistance when sitting on it, on short pile sculpted carpet but you need to relieve some of your body weight as you roll, in order to do that.
In addition, this is a very stylish stool, with chrome legs which flair out where they turn down to the floor. This stool could not be better.
