I laughed, I cried, I took exception to some language, but ultimately loved the story.....Recommended!
"We're all damaged. Every single beautiful, stupid, precious one of us. Damaged, damaged, damaged." Everyone has their history and quirks. Andy and his family are no exception. At 31 years old, Andy is divorced and living a seemingly meaningless life in the big city. A trip back home to the Midwest is not in his plans, and neither are the unanticipated events that unfold during his trip. I, for one, am glad that I did not miss out on his story! Written in first-person, this novel puts readers into the head of Andy, the lovable, bumbling protagonist. I found that I really enjoyed getting to know Andy, his family, and friends. I expected the humor in this novel, but was surprised to find myself in tears during certain portions of the story. The author did an excellent job in creating complex characters. Though I disliked some of the characters in the beginning, they grew on me as the background of their lives unfolded. Ultimately, the author motivated me to find some way to like/accept each of the characters, flaws and all, much as we are all challenged to love and accept our own family members and friends. Overall, I really liked this book. The author managed to capture the hilarious ridiculousness of ordinary life while still maintaining a sense of hopefulness and love. Honestly, I felt that the language was a bit too much at times (curse words), but it was not enough to keep me from enjoying the story. If you have a sense of humor and are not easily offended, this is a great read.
