The compact Canon all-in-one printer/scanner/copier I've wanted for years
I've been very happy with the Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer with Scanner, Copier, Fax, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct for the past 15 months, particularly with not yet having had to add ink to it at all despite daily use. However, it does have one disadvantage - a big footprint.
Thus, I was also very happy to test this new Canon TS9020 printer/scanner/copier. It has the one feature I need most as I contemplate moving into smaller quarters as we age - compact size. (See photo below of the two printers together.)
In addition, it has a new feature I love - a big tiltable touchscreen, that not only provides an easy way to make selections, but also serves as a built-in manual on how to do common tasks like inserting ink cartridges. Android users can also take advantage of NFC on the TS9020.
I very much appreciate the extra rear-feed tray of the TS9020, as it can be defaulted to the 4 x 6" photo paper I like to use, without having to remove my usual plain paper tray.
Both printers include duplex printing, wired Ethernet and WiFi LAN access, and support all our household devices: iMac, Windows 10 PC, Chromebook, iPad and iPhone, though the Canon software seems more elegant to me. (The Epson used to have to be shut off and on daily for the iMac to see it, and for some reason can't currently be seen by the PC, though it used to work fine on it.)
It's nice that the Epson has a sheet-feed for the scanner, but it's single-sided, so we prefer to use our Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 for most of our multi-page scanning needs. The Epson also has a fast Fax, missing on the Canon, but we no longer have a wired home phone, so don't need that feature.
Quality on both printers for color prints is amazingly good compared to previous generations of inkjet printers. However, I've not been happy having to cut apart and trim multiple 4 x 6" color prints on an 8.5 x 11" sheet of photo paper on the ET-4550.
The only real weakness of the TS9020 compared to the Epson is its smaller ink cartridges. It took an hour of searching to even find out what cartridges the TS9020 uses Canon CLI-271 - Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow - 4 color pack and Canon PGI-270 XL Pigment Black Twin Pack, Compatible to MG7720,MG6820,MG6821,MG6822,MG5720,MG5722,MG5721 Bundle, and the claims I found on-line of under 800 pages for the XL version of most of the 6 individual cartridges (up to a bit over 4,000 for the XL black cartridge) is still pretty small compared to the 11,000 pages of black and 8,500 pages of color expected for the ET-4550. On the other hand, the Amazon price for the ET-4550 is 2-3 times that of the TS9020, so costs are likely to end up about the same after a couple years of normal use.
In case anyone else likes to print color 4 x 6" photos as much as I do, here's where to find paper to match the sample packed with the TS9020: CanonInk Photo Paper Plus Glossy II 4" x 6" 400 Sheets (PP-301 4X6_400)
Overall, both are great printers, but if I were buying today, I'd choose this Canon TS9020, primarily for its compact size and big touchscreen.
Highly recommended!
