Original or Compact?
The question most often asked is which one do you choose, the Original or the Compact version? The mirror on the Original measures approximately 37mm x 29mm with an 81mm armature. The Compact measures approximately 37mm x 18mm with a 46mm armature. (See photos showing dimensions.) So, the Original is 61% bigger than the Compact, but positioned 76% further away from the point of attachment. 1. Because the Original is farther away from the eye, it tends to be slightly easier to focus. Most people have no problem focusing with either mirror, but a few people report that it is easier to focus with the original. 2. Because the Original has a longer armature, it tends to bounce or vibrate slightly more. 3. Because the Original view is squarer than the Compact, it is sometimes easier to perceive what you are seeing. With more visible in the foreground and the background, the frame of reference makes it a little easier to comprehend what one is seeing. (The squarer view also helps to offset the effect of any vibration, in effect, compensating for the longer armature.) 4. Because of the Compact is positioned much closer to the eye, it gives an apparently wider field-of-view. 5. Because the Compact is smaller and positioned closer to the face, it is slightly less obtrusive or ostentatious on the person who is wearing it. 6. Both mirrors can be configured such that the longer dimension is either horizontal or vertical. You can even place the mirror at an angle, if you wish. The joints and frame are sufficiently stiff such that once configured they tend to stay in place. They do NOT loosen or droop during normal wear. Personally, I have no problems focusing with either mirror. Hence, I tend to use the Compact version during my daytime walks. I find that I like its smaller, more compact form. And it seems to do about the same job. However, for night walks, I prefer the original. Figuring out what I'm looking at in the dark is difficult and the squarer image helps me in that area. I also don't feel so self-conscious with a larger mirror under the cover of darkness. At this price point, I suggest that users buy both versions. P.S. 2-1/2 years later and both mirrors still work like new. No sagging. No loosening of hinges. No deterioration of plastic parts. No corrosion of metal. No scratches on mirror. One more point that may not be obvious to new users. While you can position the mirror on either side of the head, I'd suggest that you position it on your LEFT side. On two-way roads, this allows you to see approaching traffic coming from the rear when you're walking/biking on the right side of the road. And if you hug the right side of the sidewalk or bike path while walking/biking, any bicyclist or skateboarder approaching you from the rear will be passing you on your left side.
