A great high-end package with room to grow, at a great price!
Having purchased another product that bragged about it could do *this* and it could do *that*, I finally purchased this system from GWSecurity...and then I was lost.
It was a whole new world between my old analog DVR and this newer NVR technology. My first "support" email to GWSecurity was rather dumb (in hindsight), yet the GWSecurity support team was very nice about it and sent me an email very quickly with clear instructions. It turned out to be stupidly simple and I should have figured it out for myself. Well, at least I know they support their products!
Using my 42" TV for the NVR main monitor, the image quality is fantastic (high definition to my eyeballs), and I can't speak highly enough. Plus, the camera's are plug-and-play, making setup almost too easy (I thought to myself...What am I missing?) Nothing...everything worked perfectly the first time plugging it all together.
This is a product line that I would highly recommend to those, like me, wanting to transition from the old analog DVR to the digital world of NVR security recording. You WILL be happy you switched.
Yes, I have had to email tech support yet again, but with embarrassment I must admit that it was due to my own natural instinct to not read the documentation before asking for help (which has been the problem repeatedly). This package is extremely powerful, so if like me you think something is wrong, it's probably not the system at fault...you just don't understand it yet.
MY HOOKUP:
- The HDMI output from the NVR goes directly to my 42" LG LED TV...fantastic image quality, even when viewing one camera full-screen!
- The VGA output feeds to a VGA-to-Video down-sampler (StarTech.com High Resolution VGA to Composite (RCA) or S-Video Converter - PC to TV Video Adapter - 1600x1200 RGB to TV Converter), which then feeds to an A/V wireless transmitter/receiver set (Signstek Pat-530 5.8GHz Wireless AV Sender Transmitter 2 Receivers IR Remote Audio Video *Blue*). This allows me (with two receivers each attached to other TV's) to view what the NVR sees at all times throughout my house, on each TV I've got receivers on. When combined with my main TV, that gives full-house viewing coverage.
I've had problems in my neighborhood with hoodlums walking up our driveway and "testing" the door handles of our cars to see if they are unlocked, I assume to steal something that might be of value inside (an in-fact TRUE incident only 6 weeks ago that my old analog system pretty much missed as the image quality was useless). When I tested this new system myself by walking around my car at night in total darkness, one could very clearly identify me by my facial features. THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT THIS SYSTEM!!!
As soon as funds become available, there are a few things I have planned:
1. Add some more cameras to give me greater coverage. The adjustments on the camera are not limiting (in fact the opposite, very useful), because you can adjust how much wide-angle or zoom-in you want for your specific area. In my case I would prefer not to have a fixed wide-angle camera that can see in houses next door (just for neighbor courtesy), so I zoomed in the camera, set focus, and now my coverage is perfect. But, with this much flexibility (and 6 more empty channels to use), I can see other areas that really could benefit from monitoring.
2. When I buy more cameras I'm going order an additional disk drive with them. The included drive is big enough for me, but since the NVR can hold two drives (up to a combined total of 12 terabytes I think), the second drive will give me plenty of room for all of my camera's.
One tips for buyers: Plug your mouse into the USB jack located in the front (bottom-left) of the NVR, and keep the one in the back open. The one in the back is a high-speed USB 3.0 port, meaning that if you need to back up some important video to an external drive (Seagate Expansion 4TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEA4000400)) like me, both the NVR and the external drive will communicate at their maximum capable speed. Translation: When backing up the video the process will go MUCH faster.
Lastly, owners should consider downloading the free video player "VLC", as GWSecurity apparently uses the more advanced video format of H.265 (better compression than competitors offer with no loss of video quality), and most Windows 10 players are behind the times and don't support this superior encoding system. Yea, they'll catch up over time, but at least with VLC, you'll be able to provide both video files from this NVR and a compatible player to those who might need it (like your local police).
FIVE STARS very much earned!!!
