Budget W8 tablet done right!
I picked up one of these from Walmart as an impulse buy. Although I've owned several different Android and iOS devices, this is my first experience with a Windows tablet. I paid roughly $180. Pros: Until now Windows tablet's had never been competitively priced with similar devices, much less equally priced and much more powerful Windows laptops. If, like me, you want a low risk option to try out Windows on a tablet this is definitely the way to go. This is a 2 in 1 tablet, and thus includes a detachable keyboard dock. (More on this later) The dock itself is often sold separately by it's competitors and is easily worth $40 or so alone. It feels very much like a Windows machine, without the awkwardness of most convertible touch screen laptops. It runs a full version of Windows 8.1 and not the gutted and slimmed down RT, which is a big plus. You can run any software on this tablet that you would be able to on your desktop machine given that it meets system requirements. My version came with a free year subscription to Microsoft Office 365, and 1TB of cloud storage. That's 1024GB for the uninformed, the tablet itself comes with 32GB of hard storage (expandable to 64GB with micro sd), and 16GB of cloud storage without the subscription. The tablet itself functions very fluidly. It is running on an Intel quad core processor, and it shows. It starts up faster than any other tablet I've owned. From power button to internet, you will be off and running in a matter of seconds. It only has 1GB DDR3 RAM, but I have had no issues with performance as of yet. I've been very pleasantly surprised by this impulse buy. Cons: While I will attest that it is well worth the money, there are a few concerns I had. First off, the charging connector uses a small pin style plug rather than the standard micro usb charge ports. It seems solid enough but I've had bad luck with theses kinds of chargers in the past and they are hard to find replacements when they break. The device does have a micro usb port, however it doesnt charge the device and is only used for information transfer. A missed opportunity. The keyboard hinge holds the tablet in place with a weak magnetic connection. This doesn't affect the function of the keyboard, but I wouldn't trust it to hold the tablet in place while traveling with it. In my opinion it would be worth the money spent to invest in a case or a sleeve for the tablet. As with any computer or tablet, keep in mind that storage space advertised is not equivalent to actual usable space. After installing all the updates, and Microsoft Office, I'm left with about 20GBs on the device. Not a big concern for me as it more than makes up for it in cloud storage, but if you intend to save all your files to the tablet invest in a 32GB micro sd card. Lastly, it does use a capacitive rather than resistive touch screen. This is normal for lower cost touch screen devices, and although I prefer the latter, but it functions as it should. 4/5 stars, It's worth the risk.
