Two months later I've found the perfect litter for this box!
I've tried 3 litters in this box and ONE of them works much better than the rest. The first litter I tried was the self serve clumping litter from Petco. The problem is that it is so heavy that you have to put such a small amount in the SmartScoop litter box that the urine drains down and sticks to the bottom of the machine before it scoops. This leads to broken clumps of urine that never get scooped up and remain the box until you dump it and wash it. Finally I tried "Cat's Pride Fresh and Light Premium Clumping Fragrance Free Scoopable Cat Litter" - and the only place I found it was here on Amazon. It has very small and light granules that the SmartScoop comb can easily pass through, meaning no motor struggle, and you can actually fill this box with MORE litter than is recommended. With more littler in the box the urine does not pass through and stick to the bottom. ALSO the other litters tend to get pushed to the end of the box after several scooping cycles, leading to a thin coating of litter on one half of the tray and a double-thick coating on the other half over time. With the Cat's Price Fresh and Light litter, the much smaller granules pass easily through the comb and don't get bulldozed to the end of the litter tray.
We have 1 small cat and I empty the collection bin every 3 days, but truthfully it would probably be about 10 days before the bin filled to capacity. I just do it for sanitary reasons. The design seems good, and while the motor has never been completely bogged down to the point where auto-reverse kicks in, I would hope that in the future there would be a 2 motor option. Sometimes the single motor on 1 side seems barely powerful enough to complete the scoop sequence. I would imagine this could be more problematic in multi-cat houses, or for people who don't know to use this other cat litter.
Update 11/10/2019:
Still using this litter box after 4 years. I have found that that "Ultra Pet Micro Crystals" NON-CLUMPING cat litter is a great option in this unit. It keeps it from smelling like urine. The Ultra Pet Crystal Pearls also work but they are a little harsher on my cats paws. NON-CLUMPING crystal litter is what I have been using for the past 2 years.
