I bought FOUR of these in January 2014. I leave them on more than off, but I have gone days or even weeks (at times) with it turned off. I turn the dimmer down and sometime during the night it shuts off. Then I forget to turn it back on. I've never had any other problems with them. I have replaced the bulb in one of them and I did not have any problems after replacing the bulb. Some people say they replaced their bulb with LED bulbs... I could be mistaken, but I'm thinking that part of what makes the salt work is the heat from the incandescent light bulb (which get hot). LED lights are cool to the touch (at least in my experience). They are beautiful. They seem to help me. Dr. Axe has good articles on pink Himalayan Salt Lamps and all the benefits that you can expect to get from true pink Himalayan Salt. I understand that if they are left on, they are self-cleaning for the most part. Light dusting will help IF they haven't been used for some time, otherwise they don't usually get dusty.
