THEM, IS A 21ST CENTURY HORROR CLASSIC of MUST-SEE-TV: THE EVENTS OF 2016 - 2020 IN TECHNICOLOR
23 January 1977 - ROOTS PREMIERED. In those days, The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits were the shows that truly terrorized me and gave me nightmares. The more I could imagine something in those shows actually happening, the scarier they always were. From my birth in 1959 until I left home as an adult in July , 1977 to begin undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, we read about and learned about Black History at home in a depths not duplicated in the public schools my brothers and I attended. Roots was also terrorizing because the stories the series told were based on real life. Fast forward to 8 APRIL 2021 - THEM PREMIERED. Having been thoroughly terrorized by watching GET OUT!, I knew THEM was going to be stressful to watch. It works as horror because just as in the awe of ROOTS, the events depicted in THEM actually happened, I worshipped in a wonderful predominantly Black spiritual community on the northeast side of Compton (1981-1988) and still have friends who own homes in Compton and Watts. I have also worked within the still economically segregated Los Angeles Unified Public School District, after 8 years as a Manufacturing Engineer and Project Manager in Southern California’s defense aerospace industry. THEM is a powerful and priceless work of art, accurately depicting the Uber-southern white culture I found when I arrived in 1981 in San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties. I want as many families and communities to watch this series as humanly possible. America has come a long way, and AMERICA still has a long way to grow into a world that works for all of its inhabitants.
