Adds odd flavor to wine - see follow up paragraph
My husband and I typically buy low-cost but highly rated wine, sometimes spending a lot but more often buying 88+ rated wines (Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator rated) that cost less than $12 at Costco. We like to limit ourselves to only a glass a day, so we are always looking for a "better" method of preservation that will retain the original quality of the wine but allow us to drink over a couple or three days. Our first try with the Savino was a winner. By day three, when we finished the bottle, the wine tasted exactly the way it had the day we opened it. We were delighted and thought of buying another to have one for white and another for red. Then we used it for a second bottle...On the second day, the wine had a strange off note of baby powder. We tossed the rest of the bottle and thought maybe we had left some soap in the decanter. So we cleaned it thoroughly and tried it with another bottle and had the identical problem. The plastic/silicone that comes into contact with the wine has taken on a sickeningly sweet odor that it imparts to the wine. The plastic piece on the outside of the decanter has no odor, so it appears that the internal pieces take on flavors from the wine. We're debating whether to contact the manufacturer to get some replacement pieces to try, but we're not sure what we could do differently to get a better result since we have followed all the manufacturer's recommendations.

Today I changed my review from 1 star to 5. I did contact the manufacturer and they quickly sent me a new set of the plastic/silicone parts. This time we did not place those parts in the dishwasher even though the manufacturer indicates you can. After over a month of use, we couldn't be more pleased. Any wine we've placed in the carafe has retained its quality even for five days. Our guess is that our dishwasher uses a very high heat for washing and that affected the plastic/silicone. Am ordering another today!
