I looked at many different Kamado grilles and refrained from buying one due to the cost. I recently purchased this grill at Costco. This grill is a great value. It provides all the capabilities of the Green Egg and others that are twice the price. The quality is excellent. Like anything with use, you discover little things that can be improved on. For indirect cooking and smoking, a heat shield is a necessary accessory. To a lesser extent, so is a pizza stone. The Pit Boss specific heat stone is only available on their website. With shipping, it’s $70. I didn’t like the placement of the Pit Boss Heat shield as it rested directly below the lower grate making the lower grate somewhat unusable. I was looking for a better way to accomplish the same thing with greater flexibility and for less cost. Here’s my solution. I purchased a replacement lower charcoal grate for a Weber charcoal grill for $11. This grate is pretty heavy duty. Next I purchased (6) 1½” x 1½” angles with some fasteners for $5. I fabricated a “Z” hanger using the angles and bent a crimp in the top leg to lock it into place. These hang at 3 different locations on the fire box and support the grate. Next I purchased a high quality ¾” thick 14” diameter Cordierite pizza stone. The stone sits on the grate and acts as a heat shield. It can also be used as for cooking pizza by repositioning it to the Pit Boss lower grate. In addition, remove the heat shield/pizza stone and place charcoal on the Weber grate for a quick grilling of hamburgers and the like. This works great, offers total flexibility with a total cost was less than $55 including the pizza stone.
