So easy to use, does a perfect job of spiralizing
Ok, so my review is going to be short and sweet because all I have used this for so far is spiralizing zucchini, but if that's all I ever do with this product I will be completely happy! I have a manual spiralizer and although it turns out a nice spiral zucchini, it takes forever and is a real wear on the arms. It took me almost 7 minutes to spiral 4 large zucchinis and my hand was starting to cramp when I was done. I've been making a lot of zucchini pasta lately and every time I prepared the meal, I did not look forward to the spiralizing. So I asked for one of these for Christmas this year, and my wonderful in-laws got it for me.
What a joy to use. Seriously! It's a piece of cake to attach to the mixer, it spiralizes the zucchini quick and consistently. And clean up couldn't be easier. Just two small pieces to wash under warm water. I can get through 4 large zucchini in about 2 minutes, and my arms feel fine! My only criticism is I wish there was one more attachment for a little bit thinner spirals. My hand spiralizer did about 1/4" thick strings of zucchini, this one is closer to 3/8". But that's just a minor complaint. The machine is fast...once you get the zucchini mounted you can crank the mixer up to 10 and just fly through a zucchini. It does leave about 1/2" on the end (as you'll see in my video) but I just chop those up and add it to the pasta dish.
The box that this comes in is very well built and designed to store all the parts in a neat, safe and organized way. It's got a magnetic closure on the front flap to keep it closed, and all the parts are separated by foam padding. Very well designed.
It's not a cheap gadget (my manual spiralizer was about $8) but this is a very well build and efficient device that should work for years and make cooking a lot easier. I look forward to slicing apples next fall when we start drying lots of apples, but for now it's zucchini all the time!
10/8/17 update: Finally had a chance to use the apple peeler/slicer attachment. Had about 40 apples to dry so needed them sliced up. The slicer is so great! I used to use a manual hand cranked peeler/slicer and it was a pain in the ***. The KitchenAid version is perfect! It holds the apple on the device well, does a great job peeling and the slices come out perfect while leaving the core on the slicer. It does splatter apple juice a bit, so I found wrapping a towel around the base of my mixer and using my hand as a shield behind the apple as the slicer runs through it helped to save a lot of clean up later.
After using both the spiralizer and slicer I can easily state this gadget is a must have for your KitchenAid if you need to perform either of these functions in the kitchen. Great investment. Parts are holding up just fine.
