Wiley Wallaby, Licorice King / Champion of Democracy?
There's one major issue with this licorice: it's not available in 50 lb. barrels. I live WAY overseas, in a barbaric place where the natives 1) don't appreciate the sophistication of licorice and thus 2) don't have it. Hard to believe, isn't it? Not in stores, not in online shops, not in hipster boutiques, not even after a Revolution that threw out a corrupt President and his crime family - no licorice. As a humanitarian gesture, you'd think that Western countries would be lining up to provide a population learning to breathe free with the bittersweet jubilation that comes from a bite of a good licorice, but no. A people emerging from the depths of Communism and the deprivations brought on by corrupted Capitalism deserve a mouthful of the unbridled elation that only licorice can bring. But what do we get? Forums on democracy, training for journalists, free dental clinics, government reform, industrial modernization, but not a whiff of licorice. A shame, a blight on Democracy, a kick in the shins to basic human compassion, particularly when there is a product this fine so readily available.
And this is fine - big, thick, little-finger-sized pieces, nice and chewy, just bitter enough to get the salivary glands flowing, just sweet enough to remind you that this is candy, and since we're all adults here, with a mild laxitive effect a day or so down the line. This is not that ridiculous Scandinavian Abomination soaked in salt that befouls the sacred licorice name. (I swear, the Swedes are insane with their free health care and salty licorice. That's a slippery slope I DO NOT want to be on, and I'm certain we're all agreed on that.) This is the real thing; so fine, so rare, so filled with human yearning.
This Wiley Wallaby character, whoever he/she/it is, has done a good thing. This is a product that takes me back to the licorice of my youth - hard or soft, chewy or ultra-chewy, sticky or covered with lint from my jeans pocket - days when I saw the world as an open adventure, and one that could not have been pursued had there not been licorice. And now that I know how to get it from there to here, I shall never be without it again.
But like I said, this 2 lbs package (so deceptively huge it seems when reading the description, eyes slurry with tears brought on by licorice deprivation) turns out to be disappointingly tiny. 2 lbs goes oh, so fast. 2 lbs of mashed potatoes, 2 lbs of Neosporin, or 2 lbs of Legos, that's one thing; but only 2 lbs of licorice when Russian tanks are on the horizon and 42 million people are begging for 'just a taste'?
It sickens me to know that they offer even smaller packaging options. Barrel-size, please. We will pay whatever price.
