It works; Here are our results from our at home research:
We've performed a small scale "not-so-scientific" research on different types flying insects and some crawlers.
Test methods:
We've shot all test subjects at about 12" (+,-2"), perpendicular to their back lateral plane, taking careful aim using the iron (orange plastic) sights.
Test subjects;
* Black Fly (Simuliidae), population 5/5 dead within 10 min. Instant knock/stun effect. Most were dead within couple minutes ( No observed life signs after some wiggling)
* Green Fly (Lucilia sericata), 3 of 5 dead in 10 min, 4/5 dead after 1hr., instant stun effect.
* Mosquito Aedes aegypti and Culicidae); 5 of 5 test subjects dead instantly and most broke apart into multiple pieces.
* Clothes Moths, 5/5 dead within a minute or two, some wings ripped apart.
* Various types of house Spiders; 5/5 dead within 3-5 minutes.
* Yellow jacket, 1/5 dead within 10 min. total of 2/5 dead within 1hr, 1 mia (faith unknown),. the rest are very angry swearing for revenge but so far none of them has been able to followup on their threats.
Carpenter Bees all alive within 10 min of being shot, 2/5 dead in 1hr. the rest are very dumb. They are flying cows of the bee family.
important considerations: Make sure the salt intake valve is fully covered with salt and hold the gun parallel to ground when priming the pump in order for maximum amount of the salt is sucked in to the "firing" chamber. Aim using iron sights, they tremendously improve accuracy even if the shooting distance is just 12 inches. Shooting at a perpendicular angle to subject at 10-12" distance yields best results. Wear goggles and a face mask to avoid ingesting splash back salt particles or you may end up exceeding your daily sodium intake.
Conclusions:
Bug-A-Salt is a fun and effective equipment (merging toy and a useful tool) even some subjects don't appear to be effected immediately, due to sodium chloride particles embedded within their body similar to shotgun pellets most test subjects succumb to their injuries within 10 minutes. Harder shell exoskeleton insects(such as carpenter bees) are more immune to the salt particles.
A big thanks goes out to the ant colony for cleaning up some of the dead insects...
