To my surprise, I really like it!
I typically don't buy keyboards for tablets because the keyboards usually aren't that good and few tablet apps make great use of the keyboards anyway. However, I decided I would try out the Fire Keyboard since I already had the 4th Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" and the 4th gen Origami Case. Here are my thoughts on the Fire Keyboard:
✔ PROS
The keyboard works pretty well. Typing up small messages, web searches, and social media posts work just as you expect it to work.
The trackpad works well too. I haven't observed any issues using it so far. You can use two fingers on the trackpad for vertical scrolling. This works on the Kindle home screen and in the Silk web browser.
The keyboard has dedicated playback controls which worked for both videos and music.
The arrow keys on the keyboard allow you to navigate Kindle apps and settings.
The keyboard integrates really well with the Kindle Origami Case. When transporting the Kindle, the case holds the Kindle and Fire Keyboard in place with magnets. It makes for a very slim and portable package.
✔ CONS
The keys are flat and are not spaced apart. There isn't much key travel at all. Touch typists aren't going to be singing the Fire Keyboard's praises. Please note however that, what the Fire Keyboard lacks in terms of typing experience, it gains in ultra-portability.
As best as I can tell, there's no way to "right-click" with the trackpad.
Using the arrow keys to navigate the Video app worked fine but in the Music app, the experience was clunky.
This thing should be $20-30 cheaper. This way everyone would get it, not just us early adopters with too much disposable income. :-) I'd give it five stars if it was cheaper.
✔ SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS
- Allow a horizontal scrolling gesture with the trackpad for the Home Page carousel, Silk web browser, WP Office Spreadsheets.
- Allow it to be connected to multiple devices and allow the device to be selectable.
- Allow support for Fire TV.
✔ TIPS
- WP Office is a free app for editing and viewing Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents. Get it from the Amazon app store.
- You can use two fingers on the trackpad to scroll vertically in some applications, such as the Silk web browser.
- While using the Silk Browser, press F2 to begin typing a URL.
- From the Kindle Home Screen, if you start typing, a screen will be displayed allowing you to search the web, search amazon, and search your Kindle for what you are typing.
✔ BOTTOM LINE
Stated simply, the keyboard works as advertised. It's not cheap and it doesn't provide the best typing experience. However, it's super portable and ultra convenient, especially if you also have the Origami case.
You shouldn't plan to type up a novel with it. For short emails, web searches, and social media posts, it should work fine.
If you plan to also get the 4th generation HDMI adapter, the keyboard can then serve as the Kindle's remote control. I just ordered the HDMI adapter and plan to use it in this fashion.
