Final Fantasy XV: Boyband - The Coleman Years
Truly one of the best emo Boyband camping simulators to date. They even got the rights to include Coleman product placements throughout making for one truly enjoyable commercial. My life is complete! Thanks for filling that void SE!
Okay, all joking aside. Now that we've had our fun lets get to the meat and potatoes of this review. Does this game return us to the days of old before FF got all weird with girls fighting monsters in mini skirts? Well, here's my opinion - which you should take as a grain of salt since the game's been out less than 24 hours. The first thing the game says when it launches is "A Final Fantasy for fans and first timers." I think that is a fair statement.
Graphics: 10/10
This will easily be the first thing you notice. The graphics are truly amazing - Probably the best to date on current gen consoles and without a doubt the best FF to date. It reminds me of how I felt going from FF on the NES to FF2 (IV) on the SNES. It's that good. Compressed youtube videos won't do it justice. You'll have to actually see it to know what I'm talking about.
Music: 9/10
It's not EMO, but it will do lol. Seriously though, the soundtrack is epic and has matched the tone of the story perfectly.
Gameplay: 9/10
SE, you had me at Open World. Need I say more? They did an excellent job of incorporating an Open World environment into a FF game. The map is very detailed and beautiful. The fights are also very fun. My first thought after finishing the tutorial was, is this it? Man, this is super boring and oversimplified... Was I wrong. What I learned after playing for several hours however, is SE did an amazing job of making it easy-to-learn yet hard-to-master. When you consider all the options to a fight (resists, changing weapons/magic, summons (which are absolutely epic), combos, backstabbing, rescuing your buddies, warping, ascension/passives, skills, etc), and the fact that its all very fast paced with some pretty mean monsters in your face, it's actually very very fun. I would describe it as a turn-based/ARPG hybrid if that's even possible. It felt stiff at first, but now I feel my fingers dancing all over the remote. Very satisfying! Load times are extremely long, but expected in this type of game.
Story: 9/10
SPOILER FREE: First, I want it out there that the game's been out for less than 24 hours, so there's no way I could possibly know a whole ton about the story. What I can tell you, is that what I HAVE seen I've enjoyed very much. So far it's contained everything that makes a FF game great - Epic Story, Magic, Technology, Crystals, Kingdoms, Betrayal, War, Romance, and more. Again, this is just what I've seen so far. If that's your thing, then you won't be disappointed.
Overall: 9/10
If you like this genre, you will love this game. Is it perfect? No. I think most would agree it would be near impossible after 10 years of SE circling the hype wagons. If you go in with realistic expectations, not expecting some life changing experience, I think you'll look back on this game very fondly. Unlike many studios today, SE actually launched this with very few bugs (looking at you Bugthesda). All I can say is if you play this game and feel ripped off, what more could you have wanted? I'm sure there will be haters and trolls as that's what they do, but seriously this game is as close to a masterpiece (for this genre) as you're gonna get.
Final Thoughts:
The question everyone is wondering - is it worth $60? Yes, I believe it is! Price is such a relative thing (I've blown $100 on a 2 hour dinner and been more than satisfied). I can say with utmost certainty, 100+ hours of this game will leave me feeling very very satisfied in my investment. Some other games that I consider the best: Bloodborne/DarkSouls 3, Final Fantasy's I, IV, VI, VII, Metroid Prime Trilogy, The Last of US, Uncharted 4, Witcher 3, and Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallouts (though riddled with bugs). I hope this helps give you an idea.
