This butter dish is perfect for leaving butter out on the counter so it's soft and spreadable but still protected from the environment. I can almost guarantee that 100% of the reviews that complain about the lid not fitting are due to the gasket on the lid being upside down. It seems that some of these dishes leave the factory with the gasket installed upside down. Ours had this problem, but after taking the gasket off, flipping it over and reinstalling it the lid works perfectly. The lid gasket has two ridges to make a seal. One of them is right at the edge of the gasket and the other has a bit of space from the other edge of the gasket. Make sure that there is some vertical space on the gasket between the undersurface of the lid and the first ridge on the gasket and it will fit much better. Flipped the other way the gasket doesn't sit down inside the container and jams between the lid and rim of the container, causing a poor fit. A bit of butter can also lubricate it to to fit easier than a dry gasket against a dry container.
