High capacity AND very comfortable! Finally!
I have used a large size Sckoon cup for 2 cycles now, and have to say, I love it! I chose the large size to use for my heavier-flow days because it's a softer, squishier cup than most other choices out there, (so more comfortable for me) and the holes are all the way at the top of the cup & angled to prevent overflow or leaks even if its pretty full. So far, I'm pleased to say, it's been a great success! In the past I have tried using a Divacup, but that cup has a ridge at the rim of the cup that was quite stiff and would make me feel almost bruised or something - it made me very sore, and it was so stiff that it kept making me feel like I had to pee. The next cup I bought was a small blue Selene Lunacup - that is very comfortable, but doesn't hold enough for my heavy days. Finally, I broke down & bought the Sckoon cup. Turns out, it was a great choice! Because it's so squishy, the first time I tried it, I had a little trouble getting it open, but now I can do it without a problem, and because the shape is so smooth, taking it out doesn't hurt - its a very smooth process as long as you're gripping & squeezing the cup itself (don't try to take it all the way out just pulling the stem). One note on insertion - the instructions say to turn the cup after it's in...well, I find that just about impossible to do, so I kind of use my finger & "stir" around the cup to feel that it's open all the way around, and if it feels like it is, then I pull just slightly on the stem to make sure I feel a little resistance - that is the suction that says it's doing it's job. When you put in a cup, you angle it more towards your back - not straight up, like a tampon. It goes in until the base is fully past your pubic bone, which you'll feel because there's no room for it to open until it's past that part. The stem on this cup is very soft & flexible, and at first I was a little worried that it would break, because I do use the stem to pull the cup down until I can reach the base -no problems so far, and the stem is nice & grippy (the stem has little ridges that help you pull it down). Another tip - when removing the cup, make sure you are holding some toilet-paper in your other hand to wipe it with immediately after emptying into the toilet...that's very important if you don't want a mess on your hands. Literally.). If you're in a public restroom with no sink in the stall, just use either a wet wipe from your purse to finish cleaning it up before re-insertion, or just toilet paper if you're in a pinch. Really, it's no big deal but I can go long enough in-between empties that I have very rarely (once in 2 months) have had to empty at a place other than the privacy of my own home. So, to recap - for comfort & not making me feel like i have to pee, 5 stars. Convenience of changing only one in the morning & once in the evening even on my heavy days & no leaking, 5 stars. Ease of insertion & removal, after the initial learning curve (which, you will have some trial & error with any cup) 5 stars. Now that I am more used to cups, the convenience of not having to rush to the bathroom to change products every few hours, and the fact that I can put it in when i'm expecting my period and just leave it until it starts (no more "uh-oh" moments or " period panties"), the fact that I don't have to be shoving enough pads or tampons for the day into my purse or into a suitcase if I might get my period while traveling, added to the fact that it's the most money-saving, chemical-free, non-smelly (that always grossed me out about pads & tampons), and most mess-free way to go (once you get over the fact that you're dumping a small cup of blood & wiping it out), I can say, this is the way to go. When I first got my cup, I designated a mug as the one I would use for sanitizing - when your cycle is finished, just fill the mug up with water, add the cup, and microwave on high until the water is at a boil (I keep it boiling for 2-3 mins). Then, just dump the water, let the cup dry, and you're good to pop it in the cute bag until you need it the next month! Highly recommend...sometimes I forget I have the cup in (not in the very beginning, but more towards the end of my period, when I've been wearing it for a few days). Periods don't get easier than this! So glad I decided to give it a try!
