I usually build my own beehives myself but time is money and right now I don't have a lot of spare time...it will only get worse as I get closer to spring. However, I needed more hives than I had time to build from scratch and took my chances on these hives. I was pretty surprised at the build quality right out of the box. Dovetail joints on all the box corners, the rabbits were clean without any frays, the finish was applied evenly, and no sharp edges on the metal for the telescoping cover. Everything except the boxes and frames came assembled which meant it took me about 20 minutes to unbox it and get it together (but I've done this many times before). To me, the cost to purchase these hives far outweighs the time it would take me to go get materials, get all the materials rough cut, finish cut, dry fitted, assembled, finished (about 20 hours per hive counting pickup of materials - the frames actually take the longest to make). I probably couldn't have built these any better. I have no regrets buying these and would buy them again if I didn't have time to build them myself.
Updated 2021 ... I ordered a 3rd hive march 12 - it showed up march 13th. The two I built last year (youtube video review just search for hoover hives) ... did great over the winter. I still have no issues and with wood prices being sky high right now due to covid and lumber shortage ... no way I can build them diy at this price level. Just wanted to update that I still stand behind my original review above (and youtube)
