Study places other than Amazon reveiws before you buy as well
So much to say. PLEASE READ all of my reveiw whether or not you even rate it helpful or not! You need to know a lot of things about this chip other reveiws don't even touch on mentioning.
So, I got this chip mostly for towing my heavy 5th wheel cross country on vacations with my spouse & 4 kids. My 1999.5 F350 should have had an AWA2 PCM in it due to it's build date, manual transmission, Lariat, crew cab, 4x4, for some reason it has a somewhat used looking DAC2 PCM in it, which should have been for a 2000, which confused the crap out of me since I've had this truck for over 14 years and never had the PCM replaced since I don't ever go to dealerships for this easy to work on truck. CHECK YOUR PCM before you order! You'll have practice when it arrives and avoid my 3 month fiasco. A 10m socket and 10 minutes is all you need. I ordered in March before our camping season, once it arrived and was installed my truck threw the check engine light. I tried convincing the seller MotorGod I did in fact have a different PCM than the chip was tuned for even tho he asked for my truck's info for the initial tune back when I ordered. He graciously allowed me to ship it back for a reburn to the correct PCM free of charge. THANK YOU by the way! My bad. After email tag for 5 weeks and still no chip in the mail, we called asking why it had not been returned yet. Somone had misplaced it at their office, but it was found while we were on the phone.... 4 days later it arrived back (exact same chip) with the correct PCM tune. Now it was the middle of June.... Check your PCM before you order!
Now onto the canned tunes on the TS6..... Yeash. YES they do work, you will love it, and absolutely love your truck more than you ever did. However, NO, you will not get 110, or even 140 HP more than you did before you installed the chip IF you have the stock injectors, and stock turbo. It will feel that way to your butt and guts, but don't forget torque is also added. AND the CHIP also LIES to YOU 😱 Keep reading I'll explain. You cannot get more than 60-80 more HP out of the 7.3 motor with stock injectors and stock turbo with any chip. It will not happen, ever. End of story. There is a long list of explanation as to why, which is covered on many Ford-truck-enthusiests "hint hint" websites for the 7.3 that will explain those facts without getting into all of those MANY details in this review. There's only so much tooth paste in the tube of the stock 7.3 engine, the TS6 just squeezes it harder & flatter with a brick than Ford did from the factory with kid gloves, so to speak.
Stay with me it's about to get very interesting.
Canned tunes, they are decent for the average Joe wanting more power towing a boat or something or some kid blowing black smoke faster between stoplights. But a good tuner (person writing the tune) will never make the engine sensors lie to the PCM, they will make the PCM adjust the engine based off what the sensors say. Canned tunes (what is included in the TS6 purchase on Amazon) aren't really tunes, per say. If you have a scanner for your truck (ForScan/TorquePro apps and ob2 scanner) you can look at how your sensors begin to lie with every click of the knob.
Your MAP sensor will read 2 less psi with every click; With your truck motor not running, it will read 14.7 or so (atmospheric pressure at your elevation will vary, this is mine) click thru the tunes and watch it drop to 12,10,8,6 This affects fueling, (less oxygen at those reported elevation points needs more fuel for combustion) but more fuel at the same elevation = more power
Do it again and watch the ambient air temp drop 100 degrees Fahrenheit, also adding a touch more fuel but also activating the glow plugs for better combustion of said extra fuel, this explains the claims on some reveiws of better mileage
Your accelerator pedal position will also lie; hold your right foot steady on the highway, and watch the accelerator position sensor increase it's values by 15-20% with each click. So instead of that say 50% throttle acceleration from a stop light on stock setting, when set on 140hp, it will now say 100% without even moving your foot at all. Now do you begin to see why i say that 140hp tune is just the feeling in your butt, and not actual HP? The chip is also tuning/fooling YOU by changing that sensor's input. I'll say it again, a real tune will not make a sensor lie to the PCM. "Tune" your Grandma's car by wiring her accelerator at 100% throttle any time it's pushed and she will think her car has way more HP. Say an extra 140HP? Does her car now actually have more power? NO! All you did was mess with the throttle input.
Now unplug your ICP sensor to throw it into the "defualt mode" 750psi with the engine not running, watch the ICP pressure change with the knob clicks, making the IPR adjust to the request of more oil psi to fire the injectors at higher pressure atomizing the deisel better/faster for better combustion. This is probably the closest to an actual tune's results, but by making the sensor lie instead of changing the PCM parameters.
How about the FIPW? (fuel injection pulse width)
See what's happening now? Check out all the other sensor's reactions on your own if you want.
Now, does the TS6 work? Absolutely. 100% hands down. Buy it and be happy. Or buy it and then have a tuner like Gearhead, PHP, DP or someone put real tunes on it for around $150 each time you send it in, and the sensors will not lie to you when you are trying to diagnose anything on your truck. They will also tune the PCM to run your truck better with the modifications (if any) you have on your specific truck, and you will actually get better mileage in most cases because your truck won't think it's on the top of mount Everest with deisel being poured down its throat.
Now all that said, do not ever tow a trailer using a chip without the bare minimum of a EGT gauge to monitor your Exhaust Gas Temps, if you go over 1250 degrees for a minute you will melt your pistons, it's hard to do, but possible even without a chip, like going up a mountain with a 12k pound trailer lugging it in 6th gear. You did already know about that right?
On the TS6 with canned tunes please don't ever tow over 10k pounds on the 110 or 140 hp settings. The sensors are just way too far out of whack from the lying tunes for your engine to run healthy long term under that load.
Would I buy the TS6 again? Absolutely. It is an awesome value for my current needs. Although if YOU can afford it, spend 3-4x as much for a Hydra with tunes that you can upload to it yourself, at home via USB, from a simple email from your tuner into your own personal "library" of tunes, once you buy the tune you get to keep it forever.
And that is my detailed review of the TS6 for my fellow 7.3 owners
