Bests & Worsts Reviews from Amazon

I had forgotten how beautiful this movie looks until I saw the new (2022) Imprint edition, which is region free. The photography is often stunning, especially in the candle and gas-lit interiors. The transfer is exceptional; it's wonderful to finally see this film in HD. It is uncut, though matted (I saw it in 4:3 when it first ran in theaters, back in the day when theaters could run either matted or unmatted prints. I also saw The Wild Bunch in 4:3 , which should have been illegal). I suspect that Malle intended it to be full-screen, reflecting the imagery of that era's photography. Imprint (AKA Via Vision) imports are expensive in the U.S., but the bundle packs they put out monthly reduce the cost considerably. They ship from Australia about a week before the release date. And these aren't bundle packs loaded with filler - the selection is impeccable. Highly recommended.
