Great Product! Cost Effective and May Reduce Long Term Pain, Costs-for the Animal and the Owner (aka as the staff)
I'm a clinical pharmacist, so I researched the product and it's human and vet use and published data. The ingredients seem to promise some way of delaying tartar and improving oral health in the cat/dog.
Have now used this Oratene for 2 years-you absolutely must be persistent and compliant to get good results. Mix up in advance the Oratene in a gallon of purified water from the grocery store -this makes it easier to get the dilution correct in a clean supply of water.
Ever tried to brush a cat's teeth? They are convinced you are going to murder them and the cat has very tight skin along the mouth, making it difficult for brushing/maneuvering. Also a problem for many small dog breeds.
I noticed an immediate freshening of the cat's mouth odor, presumably from a decreased bacterial load in the mouth. Overall tartar growth appears to be slowed, prolonging the inevitable dentistry cleaning as well a possible painful, dangerous decay/inflammation. Animal dental cleaning is very expensive - anesthesia, IV support, etc. is needed.
On a side note, our Vet has stated that some investigators/practitioners suggest the early prophylactic removal of some teeth in cats and small dog breeds may be beneficial. Especially in reducing/preventing odontoclastic resorptive lesions-these may occur more frequently with poor oral hygiene, among other suspected causes.
