This chair rocks... in a good way!
This chair rocks... in a good way. I had initially purchased the REI version of this chair for $79, but when I read the reviews on this one I returned the REI chair and got this instead. Incredibly glad I did... it is well made and sturdy and half the price. I can vouch for the durability of this chair...I was just in Republic of Congo for a 2 week medical mission that involved camping and travel in very remote locations (read: no roads, only canoe travel). This chair was the bomb... so lightweight I carried it easily with my pack, and I always had a seat in any village. It is off the ground so I am not sitting on bugs and snakes, but low enough I could sit upright in it in my Kelty Salida tent at night and read. On the 9.5 hour canoe ride back to civilization, there were limited seats in the dugout, and I sat in my Moon Lence chair (see the attached photo). That little canoe held 10 people, 2 goats, a bushel of dried fish, and a live owl on a string (not my owl, obviously!) It was cramped and space was at a premium. The small chair footprint was perfect, and the sling seat made that 9.5 hours on the river very comfortable. I was initially worried about the shifting of the canoe on tight turns (it was a very twisty river and the canoe had a small outboard motor, which meant tight turns), and that it might bend or snap the chair supports, but the chair shifted and rocked with the turns and held up great. It was way more comfy than the wooden chairs and empty gas cans other people had to sit on. Everyone on the mission wanted it... and I ended up gifting it to a Congolese colleague on my last day in country. He's a big guy (180-200 pounds) and he'd tried it out and knew it could reliably hold his weight. Now I need to buy another one... and you do too.
