Replacement drain warming clip fits nicely
Following the instructions available on YouTube, it was relatively easy to replace the original drain "de-icer" with this longer version on our Samsung French-door refrigerator. In theory, the longer tab on this replacement sticks further into the drain hole, which drains the condensed water falling off of the evaporator coils at the back of the refrigerator. That's supposed to help keep the water entering the drain hole from freezing. Make sure to bend the aluminum clips at the top around the heater wire. You want as much physical contact as possible to help with heat transfer. After first just replacing the clip, we still had water accumulation at the bottom of the fridge (below the bottom drawer). Of course, when I replaced it, I did not notice any ice accumulation around the drain hole or elsewhere around the evaporator coils, so I had my doubts that this replacement clip would solve the problem. We subsequently emptied the fridge and freezer and let it defrost completely over night since my wife read where that might be helpful to melt an obstruction further down the drain tube. When I had the back panel off, I noticed that the aluminum sheet attached to the back of the removable panel was curved at the bottom, so as to allow the condensing water droplets to fall over the drain channel at the bottom (where the drain hole is located). On my panel, this aluminum sheet was irregularly bent, with some points pushed out further than others. Maybe all the water was not dropping into the drain channel? Maybe some was finding its way down to the bottom of the fridge? Anyway, I bent the bottom of this aluminum panel so that it curved out further along its entire width, so when I installed it back onto the rear of the fridge, I was confident any condensed droplets would fall into the drain channel. It's been almost a month now with no water accumulation on the bottom of the fridge. Was it the defrosting and clip replacement that fixed it or my adjustments to the aluminum drip panel? I don't know, but I'm glad it's fixed for now.
