Great Field Pad
I'm in Afghanistan, living the life at one of the truly Forward FOB's. We're pretty well off overall, and my room came with a mattress. While I respect the fact that many of our Soldiers live in the dirt out here, the mattress I had was horrible. Nothing like what we'd consider a mattress in the U.S. It was killing my back so I dumped the mattress and was using my military issue sleeping pad to sleep on(on a sheet of plywood). While an improvement, I wanted something better, we get far too little sleep here as it is so I need to make the best of what I get. After searching the available options, I settled on the Teton Sports Universal Camp Cot Pad, the xtra large version (80x30x2). It was definitely the right choice. It feels like some variation of memory foam, but just enough memory foam so I can't feel the plywood sheet supporting me. The cover seems very durable. I'll be able to fit it into my duffel when I redeploy, but that's about all that's going to fit in that bag, it takes up a good bit of room when rolled. The roll-bar that's sewed into the cover helps roll the pad tight though. Overall my sleep has improved exponentially, and I expect the pad to survive the remainder of this tour and plan to bring it home for camping out of the bed of my truck.
