Ms. Luis certainly presents a very different picture of New Orleans in this first half of the Blood Duet than she has in her New Orleans based rom-coms to date. She offers a glimpse of the city's seedy underbelly, from drugs, sex and murder to dirty cops and corruption, and I found myself with increased curiosity about this vibrant, historic city. Are all elected officials in their position of power solely through ill-gotten means? Are drugs and sex available on every corner? Is every cop on the take? Avery Washington has been on her own, fending for herself and hiding in plain sight from a very early age. She makes a living reading tarot cards and has few personal attachments, knowing her life depends on staying off the radar of powerful, influential people in the city. That approach works well for Avery, until she meets police sergeant, Lincoln Asher. Something in each calls to the other, but their mutual attraction threatens to unravel some dangerous secrets that could destroy them both. I’ve been a fan of this author from the very beginning, so of course I had to read an early copy of this book, even knowing it ends in a much despised cliffhanger. This is quite a departure from her usual style, but Sworn serves to showcase how truly talented this author is. This book has a darker, more somber tone, with lots of suspense, intrigue, twists and turns. And holy bombshell, what a shocker there at the end!! There is also a ton of emotion and scorching chemistry to balance things out beautifully. Is there any question that I recommend this book?
