I wanted clear ice balls & after some work, I got them. Here's how
I really wanted crystal clear ice spheres with as little haze as possible. After a number of experiments I have come to this routine:
- Boil distilled water for at least 5 minutes.
- Put a lid on the boiling water and let sit still for about 20 minutes with the heat off.
- Gently slide the bottom mold into the water; tipping it in and rolling it flat.
- Gently remove the bottom mold and place the top mold pushing down until the rim around the sides touches the bottom mold rim. Water should come out the top holes.
- Place in freezer gently so air bubbles don't get into spheres.
- Let freeze for about two hours until there is a thick crust of frozen water, but the inside is still liquid.
- Pierce the outside of the ice ball with an injector (see below) to gain access to the liquid; make the hole large enough for air to get in.
- Pour or suction out the liquid water with the injector.
- Use the injector to draw in some of the excess boiled distilled water and Inject it into the same hole in the ice sphere made for the water removal.
- Return to freezer for 4 or 5 hours.
It takes a long time and is somewhat intensive, but one or two out of each batch are nearly perfect. The failed ones can be used as a starter for the next batch. Save them until you have four clear-but-broken ones and place them into the bottom mold cavities before step four above.
