As a fifth generation Texan who had to take Texas "history" what felt like every dang year from seventh grade on, (but may have just been that one very long year. And btw yes, we did, in fact, have to pledge allegiance to the Texas flag), I am most grateful to these authors for this clear-eyed explanation of what happened, what the motives were, and how the tale was warped all to hell in the re-telling. It's a desperately needed corrective to all the dewy eyed, hand-upon-heart nostalgia that paints these guys as Jesus in Buckskin driven by nothing but a (very manly) love of 'freedom'.
