Mediocre wifi 6 with frequent restarts
These are okay. I got them to replace my Google wifi. I got these because they accept a wired connection and many other mesh systems don't. I ran ethernet through my house so that I can't connect each mesh unit directly instead of relying on passing the signal wirelessly. They've turned out decent. Positives: - they look good - they're solid and feel like good quality - the app and it's interference are great. Much cleaner and good to look at than the Google wifi mesh. - each unit accepts a wired connection as a backhaul - they can integrate and work with other tp link mesh systems if you need to expand The bad: - they get updates all the time in the middle of the day and they get installed on the spot which means the system restarts randomly and you have to wait for it to finish. It's anywhere between 5-15 min. This happens at least 3-5 times a week at unexpected times so my wifi gets cut off. Very very very frustrating because I'm in the middle of work and suddenly I realize I dont have wifi, or I'm in the middle of streaming a movie and it cuts off. Sooo annoying. The good thing is that they install and restart on their own but still annoying. Usually updates are a good thing but on this system I get nervous not knowing when it will restart with an update. I also can't believe how many updates it gets. Usually hardware gets updates only every so often but these things get updates at least 3-5 per week and sometimes twice a day. If they didn't shut down my whole network for up to 10 min at random times, I may not mind. Since I can't control the updates I never know when I'll lose my whole wifi connection - the wifi 6 is terrible to non existing. I have 300 mbps internet. On wifi when connected to this system I only get about 50 mbps on average. When wired I do get the full speed but not on wifi. So that's also very disappointing. These are the only negatives but id say they are pretty big considering that wifi 6 is supposed to be the point of getting these and no one wants a wifi system that restarts and makes you lose connection frequently and at random. You also can't choose to postpone the updates or choose a time to install them. They install when they want to :( UPDATE- the random restarts have stopped! Not sure why but it seems that there aren't as many updates any more. Maybe there used to be a lot because they were a new model and the engineers were frequently working on improving them and now they have got them down more solid? Not sure but wifi is much better now - no more bad surprises. Got a new laptop that actually has wifi 6 and the wifi does seem to be faster on that device as well. UPDATE again 8/10/21: Wifi and the routers have continued to be great. No more random updates or internet going down. Updates do happen but not as frequently so that's great. Increased star rating to 4 stars.
