Some answers to help clear the confusion.
Personally: I take this vitamin every day, and wow, do I notice it if I forget. I am recovering from what I am sure is a lifelong deficiency of B vitamins--thankfully I am only 31! I did my research to understand my own health before my difficulty processing B vitamins (more on this below) became the cause of something more severe, like an auto-immune disorder. As far as confusion on the dosage/efficacy/vitamin form in this product: I work in supplements at a health food store, and have spoken directly with Mega-Food about their products. Here's the breakdown as I understand it, worded to be as user-friendly as possible. I believe Mega Food is a LITTLE misleading about their "s.cerivisiae" derived FoodState nutrients--but I think that's because it's a difficult concept to explain so as not to make consumers leery. But it's worth the time to try to understand, because these vitamins ARE still superior to the competition. In truth, B vitamins are impossible to extract from food sources. Though Mega Food uses food whenever possible, if it's not possible, what they do is take synthetic B-12 (or other vitamins) and cultivate it in the food yeast sacchromyces cerivisiae. The yeast is living, and kind of begins to 'eat' the vitamins, making them a part of the organism and thus converting them into the "FoodState" form that is readily bio-available in the body. Think of eating a seed vs eating a sprouted seed. Seeds, like synthetic vitamins, are beneficial to an extent, but once they begin to convert they are infinitely more nutritious. Humans flush B-vitamins from the system fairly quickly, as they are water soluble, so in simple terms--the clock is ticking. The body can only convert so much synthetic vitamin before it is flushed. The rest of this review is based on my personal research and prone to error. Please do your own research, and never trust what your doctor says as the last word. Though they would like you to believe that they are all-knowing gods, remember that Nutrition is an elective in medical school. If you have a MTHFR mutation (about half the population does), you're particularly inefficient at methylating, or converting, B vitamins and folic acid to the form the body can use. That's why Mega-Food B-Complex makes such a huge difference for so many people and no difference for others (as you will notice if you read through the reviews here). If you're an efficient methylator, great! Cheaper, synthetic B-complex vitamins may work for you, or at least feel as though they work for you, as well as FoodState nutrients. But if you're not, synthetic B vitamins are not only inefficient, they're dangerous. There is only so much room at the table, so to speak, and if your space for B vitamins and folate is being taken up by synthetic vitamins you can't convert, then the good stuff you get from whole food is more likely to be flushed out, your body falsely "believing" it doesn't need more. Thus, the irritability, anxiety, sleeplessness, low energy and other B vitamin deficiency symptoms continue. For this reason, I only take Mega Food and/or Methyl Folate, Methyl B12, and P5P (Methyl B6). I hope this helps some out there with their confusion about B vitamins!
