Schwinn Quality is real, just like you remember.
There's a lot of good stuff here, and a few things that could do with a change. Good stuff first: The front frame (the bicycle part) is aluminum; the rear frame is steel. Everything's strong enough to support a "plus-size" rider (350 lbs). Gearing is low, for easy low-speed riding. Wheels have aluminum single-wall rims and galvanized spokes. Not high-end stuff, but an upgrade from the steel rims I expected. Tires are 24x2.0 with a smooth road tread. Pump 'em up to 60 pounds and even a big rider will roll along easily and smoothly. Brake levers aren't the cheap plastic ones expected, they are steel with aluminum levers. None of the parts are really high-end Tour de France stuff, but you're probably not riding a trike on the TDF anyway. For its intended use it's fine and will last. Lots of folks recommend a new seat, but the included seat is pretty comfy. Not as soft as a gel seat, and has no fore/aft adjustment (this is the best reason to replace it) but it's not bad, and certainly not the rock that you get with many bikes. Try it out before you replace it. The not-so-good stuff: The bars are too low for an adult rider. Knees will hit even with the stem at max extension. I swapped on a mountain-bike stem with an extra inch of rise and it's just okay. Ordered new bars with 5" of rise and that should do the trick. Cables are long enough to support this modification. The seat has no fore/aft adjustment. The band brake on the rear does the job, but barely. I suppose it's adequate, but I've never liked them. My box arrived a little dinged up, but everything inside was intact. You won't damage the fenders if you cut the straps holding them in first and unpack patiently. Assembly was easy, no surprises. I had a couple spots where the packing foam was glued to the bike and left a residue; lacuer thinner quickly removed it. even from the tire. It also removed the residue from the ugly barcode sticker on the seat post. Riding a trike takes some getting used to. Yes, it pulls off the crown of the road and will put you in the gutter the first time you ride it, but you quickly learn to use the bars to steer. Stepping thru the frame is easy. It's a good choice for someone with balance issues who needs exercise. Overall, it's a good choice, but needs tweaking to get that elusive fifth star.
