Take the Plunge(r)!
People,
The engineering design of this item's frothing mechanism is what sets it apart from all others:
It uses a mesh (similar to a sieve) in its plunger assembly to aerate milk, as opposed to a coiled whisk. (Got that)? That design - and that design alone - is what enables Bodum's product to work every time, no matter what milk product (dairy vs. plant-based) one chooses to use.
As an architect I know it's extremely difficult to refute the results from engineering studies. (And, God knows, I've tried). Thus, it will not matter if you choose to buy any competitive product based on a coiled whisk aerator - be they the cheapie, battery-operated handhelds, or the more expensive electric cylinders or cups. All will work, to a point, but the results of the Bodum will supercede them. (And, yes, if you're questioning whether I have owned all the other products so named, I have).
Now, some side notes:
• You can heat up your milk before or after plunging it. Both ways will work. (But do not microwave the plunger. It has a metal spindle).
• When removing the plunger from the glass beaker, milk tends to drip so... just remove it a little bit slower, that's all.
• The glass beaker is not prone to breaking, only the foggy-headed adults who mishandle it are. Simply put the glass on a more non-slippery surface. (But you knew that, right)?
• Leave thoughts of felonious assault against your perceived worst enemy out of your frothing equation: You do not need to pummel the milk in the beaker with the plunger. Caress. Caress. Slow and steady wins the race.
In conclusion, I trust you will take my endorsement of this product as one of engineering "reason" versus mere product fascination, or "like." I certainly wouldn't want you to end up foaming at the mouth in anger at me. Happy plunging!
